5 Reasons to go camping in Algonquin Park

Updated: Nov 9, 2018

I've been going to Algonquin Provincial Park basically as long as I've been able to walk and I have to say that it is one of my favourite places on earth!

There is something about breathing in that fresh northern air that keeps you coming back year after year. Here are five reasons you should visit Algonquin Park...

1. The beautiful views

Algonquin is a nature lovers paradise. Spring, summer, winter or fall, there are beautiful sites to see no matter where you go in Algonquin. My personal favourite is camping in the fall. The colours are exquisite and really can't be compared to the colours we get in the city. Sunrises, sunsets, fog, the freaking northern lights? Nothing can beat this place in my mind! Algonquin's beauty is endless.

2. The wildlife

I've been lucky enough to see just about every kind of animal while camping. There is something really special about seeing a wild animal in their natural habitat. I've seen many moose (and babies!), countless loons (and babies!), beavers, otters, foxes, deer and many species of birds. I've never seen a wolf but I have heard them enough to know they're there. The only time I've seen a bear in Algonquin was at popular campsites where people leave out there garbage. If you don't want to see a bear in Algonquin, I would suggest you go backcountry camping! (It's better anyways). Algonquin is really a wildlife lovers dream.

3. It's a chance to explore your own backyard

Algonquin Park is only 3 hours from Toronto. Did you know Algonquin is Ontario's first Provincial Park? It was founded to protect the natural, cultural, and recreational values of the area, and I have to say they're doing a great job. We are so lucky to live in Canada and to be surrounded by so much beauty. I read a few days ago that Canada is one of 5 countries to contain most of the worlds wilderness. I truly urge my fellow Canadians to get out and explore this beautiful country while we can!

4. Spend quality time with your friends and family

Camping is really one of the best ways to connect with others and to spend quality time. With no distractions from social media, daily politics, or our cell phones we are really able to connect with our friends and family more. I have always loved going camping in Algonquin with my family and believe that all those years of camping is what grew our bond so strong. Camping in Algonquin is something that I will carry on to do with my kids some day.

5. You realize how little you can live with

Camping in Algonquin has the power to make you realize how little you can live with. It's a chance to get away from the superficial world that humans have created for themselves and back to nature. You're able to escape the traffic jams, the conference calls, the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy the now. You realize that all you really need to live is food, water, a tent and (of course) a deck of cards to play euchre!

So what are you waiting for? Algonquin Park is waiting for you!
