MILTON, Ont. - Ilse Neumann, age 77, cooks dinner for her husband Jim LaPier and herself. LaPier, age 86, is beginning to lose his memories and is suffering from other health conditions. Since this has began, Neumann has had to take over many of the daily duties around the house and their farm.

Neumann shows the tube that is inserted into her husbands lung to drain fluid that was building up due to a heart condition. "The other day he was having a shortness of breath so we went to the hospital and they drained fluid out of his lung. Now he has a tube that goes from his lungs and down his back and leg to a bag where the fluid fills up,” Neumann says.

LaPier follows his wife one step behind to their car as she takes him to a doctors appointment. His wife insists on taking LaPier to every appointment he has because of his fading memory.

Neumann waits with her husband for a doctors appointment in Oakville, for his heart condition. Neumann and LaPier are very busy with appointments for LaPier's health. “This week he has had so many appointments that I took him to. Everyday we are going to another appointment," Neumann says.

Neumann heads to the barn to complete her daily chores with company from her cat, Carl.

On top of caring for her husbands health, Neumann also has had to take on more responsibilities around the farm that they live on. Neumann and her husband have lived on their farm for over 30 years.

While his wife is in the working on the farm, LaPier takes a nap on the couch in his living room. LaPier usually takes a nap at least once a day after chatting with his friends on the phone.

Neumann fills out a few of her husbands health forms from the hospital. Neumann is very organized and handles all the medical bills and forms.

Despite LaPier's health conditions and his fading memory, he is in good spirits and appreciates everything his wife does for him. Neumann and LaPier continue to live a happy life together.
